The metal face seal groups must prevent the entrance of the foreign materials (sand, dirt, water etc.) to the roller bearings and prevent leakage of the oil and grease which are necessary for lubrication of bearings. However, they also must have a long operation life for to avoid maintanance costs even in the harshest conditions.
Metsan Seal Groups consist of two dynamic metal rings and two elastomeric load rings. Metal rings are manufactured from alloyed steel or high alloyed iron castings, hardened min.60HRC and their surfaces are ground, lapped and exposed to ultrasonic wash for obtaining required sensitivity. While one of the rings is static, the mating metal ring rotates with the dynamic housing in operating conditions.
Elastomeric load rings accomplish three distinct functions :
The load ring in dynamic housing transmits the moment of housing to the metal sealing ring.
They provide the sealing through their contact surfaces between housings and metal rings.
They provide the formation of axial load.
Material of elastomeric load rings varies according to the application temperature. The appropriate materials for the specified operating temperatures are shown below:

The most effective cause that decreases the life of the seal is the wear on contact faces of the metal rings. The second cause is the permanent deformation of load rings that results in the loss of static axial load. When selecting the load ring material, this matter should be noticed carefully.

When the seal groups are being dismantled during maintenance or revision, and even If the wear on sealing surfaces of the rings didn’t reach the limit region, the seal group must be changed with a new one. Because, the sealing surfaces of metal rings which are oriented to each other during operation, may not provide the same harmony and may cause oil leakage while running after remounting .
